Understanding GB Sizes

A0 – A6
Adult Unisex

The baseline scale most practitioners live on, cut for a standard build. Higher numbers add room through the chest, sleeves and pants. A1–A2 covers the majority of athletes on the mat.

F0 – F6
Women's — F Cut

Slim through the shoulders with extra room in the bust, tapered at the waist, a shorter skirt and more room through the hips. Size up about one step from unisex — an A1 athlete is usually an F2.

Y0 – Y6
Youth

Scaled for younger students without excess bulk. Sized with a little room to grow over a season — an important call for athletes training toward long-term goals.

T / L · W
Reading the letters

T or L (Tall) keeps the body width and adds sleeve and leg length — both labels mean the same fit. W (Wide) adds width at the same length. Available variants differ by model — check the product page.

A5W · A6T · A7
Extended Sizes

Select models carry sizes beyond the standard scale for the largest and broadest frames. Availability varies by gi — if you need the top end, look for these on the product page.

The GB Way

Your professor has fitted hundreds of students. When the chart leaves you between options, ask them — they know how a gi should sit before the first roll.

02

How to Choose Your Size

Step 01

Weight

Start here — always

Weight decides how the jacket wraps your torso. It is the single most important factor. Between two sizes? Follow weight first.

  • Too light — excess fabric gives opponents more to grip
  • Too heavy — lapels barely overlap, harder to secure
  • Correct — clean overlap, full shoulder rotation
Step 02

Height

Fine-tune length

Height refines sleeve and pant length. Once weight anchors the jacket size, height confirms whether the sleeves and legs will sit where they should.

  • Sleeves should reach the wrist bone, arms extended
  • Pants should rest just above the ankle
  • Too short and the sleeves and legs ride up in a roll
One rule above all — You can shrink a slightly large gi down with heat, but you can never reverse one that's too small. When the chart leaves you truly on the fence, size up and wash warm to dial it in.

Note — Charts are a starting point, not a verdict. When measurements fall between sizes, weigh your build and your game, and always prioritize how the gi performs in live rounds over numbers on a page.

Frequently Asked Sizing Questions

What if I'm between two sizes?

Follow your weight first — it's the most important measurement. If weight and height leave you split, go with the larger size: a touch of extra room is far more forgiving than a gi that's too tight to move in.

I wear a unisex gi — what's my women's (F) size?

As a general rule, size up about one step from your unisex size — an A1 is usually an F2. The F Cut is slimmer through the shoulders with more room in the bust and hips and a shorter skirt. Every body is different, so confirm against the women's chart in Section 03.

Should a new gi feel tight or loose?

Close but not restrictive. Sleeves and pants should sit near the wrists and ankles without limiting shoulder or hip movement. If it feels confined on the rack, it'll feel worse once you're rolling.

Do all GB gi models fit the same?

Base sizing is consistent across the GB gi line — an A1 is built to the same fit whether it's a heavyweight, a lightweight, or a competition-legal model. Choose the model on weave and weight, not fit. What does vary is which sizes each model offers — Tall, Wide and extended sizes aren't on every gi, so check the product page for what's available.

Is it better to size up or size down?

If you're unsure, size up. A slightly roomy gi gives you space to move; a gi that's too small stays restrictive with no way to fix it.
